Buckaroo is an Utrecht-based payment service provider (PSP) founded in 2005 and is specialised in offering next generation payment gateways and credit management for online merchants and coporates. Buckaroo has evolved from a small start-up to market leading PSP in the Netherlands. As the Netherlands is known to be a global stronghold of fintech and payments firms, the competition is rough in the Dutch payments landscape. Yet, Buckaroo has managed to prosper its business based on a unique proposition. The team of Buckaroo is mainly looking to build fruitful relationships with partners and clients and have done this since their foundation almost a decade ago. As a result, tech publisher Emerce named Buckaroo the best Dutch PSP in the last consecutive years; 2014-2016.

This week we spoke to Michel van Westen, responsible for Strategic Alliances and Development at Buckaroo. Michel is an experienced payments professional and is on top of the ongoing innovation in the payments industry, for example, as a boardmember on behalf of the payments insitutions of the Dutch Payments Association. Michel is not a stranger to the events of Holland Fintech and recently was part of the discussion panel at the SlimPay meetup about the subscription economy. Happy to tell the story of Buckaroo, Michel reminds us that the real success is not only expressed in numbers but rather by showing the journey where the merchants have made Buckaroo who they are now.

Michel van Westen: “It has been in the DNA of Buckaroo to think in a connected world. This mindset has brought us at where we are now and will bring us even further. We thank our success to our clients who happily made use of our signature product; our online payment gateway and check-out. With this we started processing payments for the major online retailers during the e-commerce boom in the Netherlands. During this period, we always kept expanding our portal by collaborating and recieving input from our merchants and partners. This resulted in the next generation gateway we have currently in the air offering almost all the existing payment methods in Europe (cards, iDEAL, PayPal, direct debet and many more). Besides relatively simple payment transactions we also offer after-pay solutions such as Klarna and AfterPay and we have a growing focus on digitalization of credit management process for corporates. We also integrated the emerging demand for subscription services in our platform. In the end, all transactional data comes together in the same reporting tools. We aim to give our customers the best interface experience and comprehensive insight of their payment traffic.”

Buckaroo serves for example verticals like e-commerce, government, insurance, retail and entertainment. Based on a decade of experience in an evolving industry, Buckaroo especially can help incumbent companies such as large insurers to integrate online payment gateways. Not only to increase conversion and cash flow but also to achieve more customer happines. Even if it is about payments. Buckaroo currently has a wide range of respected merchants and partners wihich are served daily from their centrally located Utrecht-office with a team reaching 60 enthusiastic payments professionals with very diverse backgrounds.

Michel: “We have successfully built payment systems from scratch by collaborating closely with our merchants and partners. Our strategy for the future will not move away from our collaborative and customer-driven approach but rather will be accentuated more. PSD2 is certainly on our radar as well as new identification methods relevant for our future business. I am happy to be involved with great initiatives that capture the latest trends in payments and I hope to work together on great things with Holland Fintech members.”
