Semmie is an Amsterdam-based online investment platform founded in 2014 by Sem van Berkel Jr. and Lodewijk Kalden. The nine office employees of Semmie are located in the creative Schinkel-district and are working daily to lower the barrier for online investing. Users can open a free investing account within a few minutes and choose the risk profile of their liking. Hereafter, everything will go automatically and smoothly with professional guidance from Semmie. The story of Semmie started when Sem van Berkel Jr. was asked by several family members to invest small amounts of money for them. Sem realized people nowadays still do not invest their money due to the complexity of wealth and asset management. It was time for a user-friendly approach to wealth management.

Investing with Semmie is possible from € 50 a month. Semmie only invests in sustainable funds, shares and obligations based on ESG ratings. Semmie was founded in 2014 as part of Sem.nl, the wealth management firm of Sem van Berkel Sr. The capital markets are no secret for father and son, as they were both closely involved in the Dutch Options Exchange (Optiebeurs). Co-founder and CMO Lodewijk Kalden provides a fresh view on the development of the online platform, which has to be attractive to see, but it also has to be user-friendly. It’s all about making it easy to manage your money.

To get their brand out there, Semmie makes use of innovative online marketing across different channels. Customer service is available 24/7 through the online chat on the website with a guaranteed live response from one of the team members.

Coco Sueters, responsible for Marketing at Semmie, is happy to tell us how Semmie makes investing more fun: “Our platform is something different than existing wealth management companies and banks. Semmie not only makes the investment market accessible to everyone but also adds a social element. Semmie originated from the idea that investing your money is a personal thing. This is why we have chosen to give every user their own IBAN account which can be shared with family and friends. We want to encourage people to send each other investment ‘gifts’, for example they can give away vouchers. The involvement of the family is therefore also important as parents and grandparents can open accounts for their children and grandchildren.”

Nowadays, savings accounts in the Netherlands are offering extremely low interest rates. Investment platforms such as Semmie enable people to get more out of their money against relatively low risks. Semmie has nearly a thousand active & happy customers, ranging from parents with small children to proud grandparents and retirees. Semmie is also very appealing for young professionals. Semmie currently aims at everyone who wants to get more out of their savings without being bored by financial overload and complexity.

Coco: “Our current and future users are definitely in for a treat as we have a lot up our sleeve for this year. Soon, the website and dashboard of Semmie will get a completely refreshed look with a little more rock ‘n roll touch. Also, in an effort to achieve more brand awareness we have partnered up with some cool agencies and social media influencers. We are glad to be part of the fintech ecosystem in the Netherlands and we look forward to meet everyone within the Holland Fintech network to do great things together.”
