11 Nov Dutch expert group reports on responsible innovation in big data
Within the past few years the question of how to approach data protection concerns has become an increasingly divisive one. In light of the new European General Data Protection Regulation, which is set to take effect in May 2018, and, on behalf of the Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, a group of privacy and data experts has published an in-depth report addressing the need for responsible innovation in big data.
The expert group, which was made up of qualified experts from academia and business, concluded that privacy should not be perceived as a threat to innovation. On the contrary, the experts stressed that a combined effort toward upholding privacy rights and nurturing innovation could help to enable further innovation. The report asserts that responsible innovation with respect to privacy rights should be considered a societal value, and further emphasizes a need for a balanced effort toward societal, economic, technological, and ethical progress. Key recommendations given underlined the need to strive for solutions that exploit the advantages of big data and accelerate innovation without jeopardizing the rights of consumers.
