Dear reader,
This week the World Economic Forum gathered in Davos the earth’s elite to discuss global challenges. The conference is dominated by the fear of a recession, sparked by disruptions by Covid, post-covid shocks and the war in Ukraine. Focus has shifted somewhat from climate change to food supply chains, inflation and interest rates. Especially the latter is causing large lay-offs in the tech industry, this week, as capital comes less cheap than before, and companies get pushed towards profitability sooner.
In Fintech this week we see some of these layoffs hitting the industry, as well as several new partnerships and large funding rounds. You can find information about upcoming events, new investments, research and breakthroughs within the industry. In addition, find more ways to support Ukraine here. Happy reading!

  • An identity verification software company from Pasadena, California, USA PopID and SunCash an innovative technology company from Nassau, The Bahamas, announced that consumers can now use the PopPay face verification platform to purchase goods and services with a central bank digital currency (CBDC) – digital money issued and backed by a government.
  • Payments firm Square from San Francisco, USA Square has acquired GoParrot, an all-in-one digital ordering and marketing platform for restaurants.
  • ZoodPay, a Switzerland-based buy now, pay later (BNPL) platform operating in the Middle East and Asia, has acquired Pakistani consumer lending fintech Tez Financial Services for an undisclosed sum.
  • Swedish fintech company Klarna is cutting 10 per cent of jobs as Europe’s largest unlisted technology company faces up to the toughest times in its 17 years amid intense scrutiny of its buy now, pay later model.
  • The Australian Payments Network (AusPayNet) has issued new guidelines around the use of Quick Response (QR) codes as a payment method.
  • The Securities and Exchange Commission proposed requiring ESG funds to provide proof of their claims to protect investors from greenwashing tactics
  • European Central Bank’s (ECB) president Christine Lagarde urged patience as the bank looks to pare back its now 8 trillion euro balance sheet in the face of galloping inflation

Many more deals and transactions from fintech this week! This week’s prominent fundings are shared by multiple sectors, including fintech, payments, NFT, and more.
  • Bloom Group S.A. (Athens, Greece), growth capital funding startup raised £300 million to grow its business across Europe and become a leading provider of revenue-based lending for digital startups.
  • Semperis (New York, US), an identity-driven cyber resilience firm has raised over $200 million in Series C funding led by KKR.
  • Motive (New York, US), fleet management solutions provider, formerly known as KeepTruckin, announced Wednesday it has raised $150 million in series F funding.
  • Rael (Los Angeles, CA, US), the holistic personal care brand focused on clean period care, intimate care, and skincare, today announced the close of a $35 million Series B investment.
  • Manta (Columbus, Ohio, US), the data startup company announced it raised $35 million in Series B funding. Manta, which moved its U.S. headquarters to Tampa last month, secured the funding through a round led by Forestay Capital.
