Last week, during the Accenture Innovation Summit, the winners of the Accenture Innovation Awards were announced.

The MOMALA-app is a smartphone application that is able to detect Malaria parasites in a microscopic image of a blood smear. By attaching the phone with it’s camera to the microscope’s ocular, the app will automatically make pictures of a thick blood smear and analyse it.

CERECSON – ASPARAGUS HARVESTING ROBOT

Cerescon is developing, producing and selling a selective asparagus harvesting machine for white asparagus. Harvesting of white asparagus is still performed completely manually due to the absence of cost-effective harvesting technology. European farmers’ profits are diminishing. Subsurface detection combined with an integrated very fast cutting robot is the patented solution that Cerescon has developed.

They want to exploit sunlight to allow objects to communicate information. Communication with light can be achieved by turning the light source ‘on’ and ‘off’ (like with a flashlight), but we cannot turn the sun ‘on/off’. Their goal is to enable objects to exploit light sources, such as the sun, to transmit information in a sustainable (no batteries) and privacy-preserving manner (no cameras).

Blue Battery

 The Blue Battery allows the storage of renewable generated electricity in a concentration gradient between fresh and salty water (H2O + NaCl), by creating an artificial gradient in times of oversupply of electricity with help of ion-exchange membranes in a process named Electrodialysis (ED). This concentration gradient can be used later to retain the energy by pumping the two streams of water back into the stack with membranes, thereby generating an electric potential in a process called Reverse Electrodialysis.
